  9. 1. Introduction *russian-intro*
  10. Russian language is supported perfectly well in Vim. You can type and view
  11. Russian text just as any other, without the need to tweak the settings.
  12. ===============================================================================
  13. 2. Russian keymaps *russian-keymap*
  14. To switch between languages you can use your system native keyboard switcher,
  15. or use one of the Russian keymaps, included in the Vim distribution. For
  16. example,
  17. >
  18. :set keymap=russian-jcukenwin
  19. <
  20. In the latter case, you can switch between languages even if you do not have
  21. system Russian keyboard or independently from a system-wide keyboard settings.
  22. See 'keymap'. You can also map a key to switch between keyboards, if you
  23. choose the latter option. See |:map|.
  24. For your convenience, to avoid switching between keyboards, when you need to
  25. enter Normal mode command, you can also set 'langmap' option:
  26. >
  27. :set langmap=ФИСВУАПРШОЛДЬТЩЗЙКЫЕГМЦЧНЯ;ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ,
  28. фисвуапршолдьтщзйкыегмцчня;abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  29. This is in utf-8, you cannot read this if your 'encoding' is not utf-8.
  30. You have to type this command in one line, it is wrapped for the sake of
  31. readability.
  32. ===============================================================================
  33. 3. Localization *russian-l18n*
  34. If you wish to use messages, help files, menus and other items translated to
  35. Russian, you will need to install the RuVim Language Pack, available in
  36. different codepages from
  37. http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/ruvim/
  38. Make sure that your Vim is at least 6.2.506 and use ruvim 0.5 or later for
  39. automatic installs. Vim also needs to be compiled with |+gettext| feature for
  40. user interface items translations to work.
  41. After downloading an archive from RuVim project, unpack it into your
  42. $VIMRUNTIME directory. We recommend using UTF-8 archive.
  43. In order to use the Russian documentation, make sure you have set the
  44. 'helplang' option to "ru".
  45. ===============================================================================
  46. 4. Known issues *russian-issues*
  47. -- If you are using Russian message translations in Win32 console, then
  48. you may see the output produced by "vim --help", "vim --version" commands
  49. and Win32 console window title appearing in a wrong codepage. This problem
  50. is related to a bug in GNU gettext library and may be fixed in the future
  51. releases of gettext.
