  3. This is where it all started; a little mini Ultima. Because this was written
  4. in Basic, there are a lot of variations floating around the net. The most
  5. common change was to modify the Magic Amulet. I believe the listing that
  6. I have included here is original.
  7. The dungeons are almost the same as what ended up in Ultima. Each level is
  8. a 10x10 and the first 3 monsters were put on the first level. Second level
  9. has 4, the third has 5, and so forth. Also, the Giant Rat that you meet on
  10. the first level has even more hit points on the second! By the time you hit
  11. the 8th level you have stuff attacking you from all directions!

  14. STARTUP1 GIF - First screen after you start the program. Lucky number
  15. is used to seed the random number generator for world and
  16. dungeon layouts. Level of play, makes monsters harder.
  17. STARTUP2 GIF - Next your attributes are generated. You just hit "N" until
  18. you see number you like. Then you choose to be a fighter or
  19. mage. Fighters can use the magic amulet but can't control
  20. what it does while a mage can't use rapiers or bows.
  21. STARTUP3 GIF - Welcome to Aklabeth screen. Shows this while generating world.
  22. OUTSIDE GIF - The world is a 20x20 grid. When you are outside, you can see
  23. your square and all adjacent squares. You are the "+" in the
  24. middle. To the south is the symbol for a town. To the west
  25. is the symbol for a castle. SW is a mountain and NE (the 'X')
  26. is a dungeon. The entire perimeter of the 20x20 grid is
  27. surrounded by mountains.
  28. TOWN GIF - When you enter a town, you go immediately to the store. Here
  29. you stock up on the necessities. When you exit the store,
  30. you also exit the town. This screen also doubles as your
  31. status screen.
  32. LB-1 GIF - This is the message the first time you enter Lord British's
  33. Castle. He askes you your name and puts you on a quest. The
  34. first quest is in direct relation to your wisdom level.
  35. LB-2 GIF - After completing you quest, Lord British sends you on another.
  36. Each new quest is harder than the previous. The very last
  37. quest is the Balrog quest.
  38. LB-3 GIF - After completing the last quest, Lord British makes you
  39. a Lord and then encourages you to try the next difficulty
  40. level. If you completed it while at level 10, he give you
  41. a number to call to report thy feat!

  44. MNSTR-01 GIF - Skeleton
  45. MNSTR-02 GIF - Thief (50% chance he will steal *any* item from you including
  46. the weapon you are using!)
  47. MNSTR-03 GIF - Giant Rat
  48. MNSTR-04 GIF - Orc
  49. MNSTR-05 GIF - Viper
  50. MNSTR-06 GIF - Carrion Crawler
  51. MNSTR-07 GIF - Gremlin (50% chance that he will eat half your food each turn!)
  52. MNSTR-08 GIF - Mimic (will actually sit still in distance to get you to
  53. go to him)
  54. MNSTR-09 GIF - Daemon
  55. MNSTR-10 GIF - Balrog
  56. CHEST GIF - In the dungeons, you may find chests containing gold and
  57. weapons.
  58. HID-TRAP GIF - Down at the end of this corridor, an Orc waites. Normally,
  59. he comes to you, but not this time? Why? Because there is
  60. an invisible trap door in front of him that he is trying to
  61. lure you to, thus dropping you an unexpected level! This nasty
  62. feature was also in the original Ultima on the Apple II.
  63. It seems to me that they removed this in the rewrite though.

  66. AKLABETH TXT - The original Applesoft source, for the curious. Who knows,
  67. maybe someone will want to make a PC version?

  69. Notes:
  70. ======
  71. Worst - Getting attacked deep in the dungeon simultaneously by both
  72. Nightmare a Gremlin and a Thief. Each turn, while the Gremlin is
  73. Situation cutting your food supply in half, the Thief is stealing all of
  74. your weapons, including the weapon that you are using!
  75. Neat - Monsters retreating when critically hurt. Then you have to
  76. Feature chase them to finish them off. This feature wouldn't reappear
  77. again until Ultima II.
  78. Badly - There is no save game option. If you get fed up, you have to
  79. Needed start all over again.
