  1. After the major crisis of the banking
  2. situation had slightly blown over,
  3. President F.D.R. faced a new and much
  4. more prominent problem; and that was to
  5. provide relief and other charities for the
  6. unemployed and now many homeless
  7. families, along with struggling businesses
  8. and facilities.
  9. He quickly designed many new
  10. programs that would surely help these
  11. families that were in desperate need of it.
  12. The Public Works
  13. Administration (PWA) was designed to
  14. provide the public with certain
  15. necessities, without providing the
  16. politicians with the opportunity of
  17. corruption, Roosevelt watched over
  18. these proceedings carefully. The plans
  19. that were implemented at this time
  20. included huge public buildings, dams,
  21. irrigation and other flood- control
  22. projects.
  23. Another relief plan that helped
  24. businesses in particular was the National
  25. recovery Administration, (NRA) along
  26. with the National Industrial Recovery
  27. Act, (NIRA). These were designed to
  28. help businesses by eliminating unfair
  29. competition through a series of codes and
  30. newly established laws. The laws against
  31. combinations of large businesses were
  32. suspended as long as workers were
  33. guaranteed specific minimum wages,
  34. maximum hours, and the right to bargain
  35. as an organization.
  36. A very successful relief
  37. operation that was specifically designed
  38. for young men was the Civilian
  39. Conservation Corps, (CCC). This
  40. organization provided work for and
  41. unemployed and unmarried men. They
  42. received food and shelter and were paid
  43. about $30 a month for their services, and
  44. $25 of that monthly sum was intended on
  45. providing for their families. Over 250,000
  46. men joined this group, living together in
  47. army-type camps. They performed
  48. outdoor work such as digging ditches,
  49. fighting fires, also restoration and
  50. construction of homes. They benefited
  51. from the workout, and their families
