Clearly the Basic Trains subway model is not good enough and merely a placeholder. I think the a model based on the DlxTrains hopper but with an added driver's cab would work, but am open to ideas. It should have the appearance of operating controls and an inventory for ballast such as a hopper from a construction train.

I just noticed, this mod really needs a model to be able to work on its own too. It currently references the subway wagon art assets without referring to that mod as a dependency or making a copy. And you end up in a really weird position when inside the wagon if that model is not available, visually way underground somewhere! (at least for my singleplayer world with attachment offset patch enabled)

I'd suggest to convert this into a wagon rather than what it is now. I do think that moretrains's gondola model would be perfect if we manage a way to raise the walls a bit more.

The real challenge I think is putting a decent-looking driver's cab on the model, and maybe a chute for gravel down the side. Something that looks like a plausible machine for dumping ballast, probably with inspiration from something from Plasser & Theurer.

mmmh yeah but that would make the wagon a bit too long imo. We should short the gondola a bit to make up space for the cab
