I am thinking of writing a mod that will add many types of insect life using mobs_redo, along with tools to combat them and items and nodes that they make. Id like to know if you would consider adding this before I write it. If you would, please help me develop my ideas by commenting.

The basic structure is that most bug types will be a colony. The colony will expand if left unchecked. When attacked, some types will swarm, and a queen will be released, that, if not killed, will start a new colony.

Specifics:

Ant attack: small bite problem: builds nest from dirt, queen will make another, nests have a low chance of making queens

termite: attack: none problem: tunnels plank nodes, turning them into falling node type sawdust.

fly: problem: makes annoying buzzing sound, spawns several when bones are dug, but also anywhere, can bite get rid of it with a fly swatter. no queen/nest

locust: no nest/queen. Whole swarms are spawned at once, they eat all green vegetation.

squash bug: spawns near pumpkins and melons. Solitary. Does not swarm, moves slowly, stays near the plants. Eats the plants eventually (kinda low chance). On die, squishes to make an unbreathable yellow gas, which lingers for a while.

waterbug: Swims in water, but stays near "air". very fast. Has a small bite. Solitary or in groups of 1-4

wasp: has a nest node. Punching the node releases 5 wasps. Digging the node releases 30 wasps plus a queen, which has a bigger sting. The node can safely be gotten rid of with lava, water, or by using wasp poison wisely

honeyant: like the ant, but each ant drops 1 honeyant sack, a source of food. you could farm them, but you might get bit. using poison doesnt drop the honey.

rock larve. (lives deep down) turns rock into a rock-larve nest. breaking this releases 10 larve, which have a small bite if attacked, but are otherwise peaceful. They will go and make new nests if not killed. They die in lava and water, and bug poison.

relf-replicating robo-bugs: These are pretty rare and deep, but they dig through the ground looking for ore. When they find it, they dig it and replicate themselves. Killing one drops what it has mined, but the others will attack! These have powerful "bites"

lava wasps: spawn and swarm around lava underground. They swarm you, and place fire under your feet as well as sting you. They have a nest that they stay near. Squishing one places a flowing lava node.

gravel stinger: digging a normal gravel node might oust a gravel stinger. This bug is solitary and vicious when attacked and has a bite. If left alone, it will go and place a gravel mound and disappear from whence it came.

fire ant. an ant with a nastier bite, and also places an ant_fire node, which is a non-spreadable fire. Attacks any animals.

cloud flea: flies in swarms in the heightrange of the clouds.

Sand flea: tunnels in sand, turning it into a nest trap that you could fall into and drown in

bombadier beetle: solitary, attack is to shoot a blob of acid that burns the player if hit, or alternatively puts down an acid liquid

Items/tools:

bug spray: on use, produces a gas that kills bugs (and hurts the player, get out of there! Can kill some bug nests)

Exterminator: kills ant and termite nests

garden bug net (node): protects nearby plants from locusts

fly swatter: gets rid of flies and other flying insects, if you can hit them!

Various nest nodes, and traps that some bugs make. also the gas nodes that the bug poison makes

If you have suggestions for more, post them. Nathan, do you think you might add this if I write it? what changes to the idea would I need to make or suggestions/rules do you have?

this mod would be kinda greify... one possibility is that it would respect protected areas, but that would reduce the fun level :)

Adding more mobs is always a good idea, the server needs more things to bring it life. I'm not sure how I feel about adding specific tools just to kill the bugs though. It would be more inline with my overall idea for the server/game for the bugs to be killed with the normal weapons, swords, axe, bow, etc. Also flyswatters are a fairly new invention, and not in period for the server.

Locust don't sound great, too many people would complain if their farms were devastated. Leaves on trees don't grow back, so the locust couldn't even eat those. All they could safely 'eat' would be dirt_with_grass, turning it into dirt.

All the other bugs sound okay.

I am still working on this, albeit slowly. I am spacing it out with modeling other animals (which you can find here: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25134&p=378742#p378742 , you may be interested in using them for mobs, there is a lizard, rattlesnake, and a beaver)

Those animals look nice, but they don't really match the style of any other mobs on the server, as such I probably won't add any of them. Don't take it personally, they look like they are done well.
